TSM was founded in 1962 by the doyen of the South Indian textile industry,
Karumuttu Thiagaraja Chettiar - a great philanthropist who also founded several engineering and arts colleges, polytechnics, teachers' training institutes, and primary and secondary schools

The initial objective was to provide quality management education for working executives and entrepreneurs. The success of this programme resulted in the inception of a part time MBA programme in 1972 followed by the full time MBA programme from 1986 onwards. With the phenomenal growth in the InfoTech industry, a full time MCA programme was added to the curriculum in 1994.

Right from inception, the school has firmly believed that there is no substitute for good education, and all available resources are used to provide each student with quality education and facilities.

Thiagarajar School of Management is run by the Manickavasagam Charitable Foundation - an organization that has been actively involved in several primary and higher educational projects. Shri. Manickavasagam Chettiar, the prime mover behind TSM, was its Founder Correspondent.

TSM prides itself on being one of the few institutions that does not accept any capitation fees from students seeking admission.

The school is fully supported and funded by the Loyal Textiles Group - an export oriented textile mill with an annual turnover of over Rs.450 crores.

The Chairman & Managing Director of the Group, Shri Manikam Ramaswami, a Gold Medallist from IIT Chennai, is the present Correspondent of TSM.

Located in the eastern part of Madurai, Thiagharajar college of Preceptors was founded in in 1956 by Thigesar trust. The trust was created in 1944. The school is run under the supervision of appointed Secretary and Correspondent- Thiru.Manikam Ramaswamy, B.Tech.(Chairman and Managing Director Loyal Textile Mills Ltd ).

The courses offered by the college includes B.Ed., M.Ed and M.Phil. Presently only B.Ed. department is functional with an approved strength of 100 students. It is a co-educational institute and has been affiliated to Madurai Kamarajar University. Thiagharajar college of Preceptors has also been recognized by National Council For Teacher Education(NCTE).

The college provides training to the students with the help of attached Thiagarajar Model Hr. Sec. School. This allow students and staffs to conduct various educational researches from time to time.

Admission in the college is purely based on merit basis. The state level entrance test is conducted and the candidates are selected on the basis of Academic achievement and extra curricular activities. A candidate should have minimum UG qualification for appearing in the test. However, most of the aspirants have PG Qualification and few are M.Phil qualified.

While, the extensive activities of the students cover organizing science programme in rural school, daily tutoring Programme for weak students of model school and community service programme. Our experienced teaching staffs provide their services by conducting training programme for teachers of reputed schools like TVS Lakshmi Mat/Hr.Sec.School, inspection of other schools for evaluation of academic and non-academic aspects and expert suggestion for bringing considerable improvement- acting as resource persons for the required schools.

Our Students have successfully executed a project under the able guidance of Principal and few staffs members to provide ways of Increasing retention of workers in Loyal Textile Mills. Koilpatti and Valli Textile Mills , Sattur. Further, Government of Tamil Nadu through Sarva siksha abhiyaan has sanctioned a project for Rs.1.75 Lakhs to improve the teaching skills of teachers at elementary level.

Our faculty members include principal and lecturers of English, Tamil, Maths, Physical Science, Biological Science, History, Commerce and Physical Education.

We undertake professional development of the teachers and guidance in M.Ed/M.Phil through dissertation, funded projects and participation in seminars, workshop etc.

The mainstream subjects taught in the school includes Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Commerce, Economics, Accountancy, History, Geography and Indian culture. The school also provide choice for vocational subject such as Maths and General Machinist.
